[Calculus pset x4, Chemistry Pset, Final Paper Proposal, Seminars x2, Taekwondo x2, Physics Quiz, CLASSES!!!] For the moment, I have no profound thesis for a profound blog post, so I’ll go ahead and zoom in on some the crazy things that happened amidst the massive blue busyness up there. MONDAY 12:07 AM You know what’s the best part about going to 3.091 [Chem.] at 11 in the morning? Going to Steam Cafe © at noon. OK â€" Maybe that’s not exactly the right attitude towards a very expensive education, but truth is, sometimes real food is a serious priority (you will see why soon). RICE. ORANGE CHICKEN. CARROTS/CELERY. I understand this is not by any means high quality, but right there in one plate I’ve covered 3 groups on the food pyramid. MONDAY 7:10 PM If food were traditional art, this would be my surrealistic modern masterpiece: LETTUCE/ROMAINE PIECES/KIMCHI, BREAD, WALNUTS, PRESERVED FISH Compared with the example above, this is hardly real food; but obviously, I was desperately trying to pack in as many food groups as I can. Despite my honest efforts, this is still a very pathetic attempt at making a meal. I will have to try harder. TUESDAY 4:35 PM Mastering Physics; Bane of my existence, and I know I’m not alone. For 8.01 â€" the intro physics course that a large portion of the freshman class enrolls in â€" we have to complete Mastering Physics assignments twice a week. You are essentially given five or so multiple-part problems and you earn points by typing in the right answers. This is honestly the most tediously formatted, arbitrarily graded online tutorial program. You get points for getting the question right, obviously. You also get bonus points for not opening hints. But then you can gain points for opening hints and answering hint questions right; it’s crazy. And if you get a true/false question wrong; sorry â€" that’s a heartless 50 percent deducted. Moreover, the problems are not at all similar to questions on quizzes and exams â€"because Mastering Physics is probably the only “high-school-like” assignment here. The problems test one or two concepts at a time, whereas exams pretty much combine a bunch of concepts, put twists on the classical examples, and churn out brain-fry ing exam questions. Mastering Physics does function as a potential grade booster and an illusion that you are indeed “mastering physics” â€" until the real exams come that is. WEDNESDAY â€" Nothing happened on Wednesday, because all I did was calculus; I guess that p-set happened ….at 5:00 AM the next day. THURSDAY A pset completed @ 5:00 AM leads to waking up at 1:00 PM, realizing p-set had been due at 12:45 PM, frantically trying to get p-set in, and overall, starting off the day really late, and really grumpy. But I had a movie screening to take care of. I write for the Arts section of the Tech, the MIT student newspaper. @ 7PM Thursday, there was a special screening for Red Cliff, an epic ancient Chinese war film that lasted 2.5 hours and I had a physics quiz the next day. The film was average, but it was surely a good study break! Or investment of a study break, because I haven’t actually studied yet. Charliecard is my best friend. Have it on hold, you’re ready to go! Swipe, swipe â€" feels like Boston is resting in my palm. Although, it was my first time traveling alone at night; all I could do was pray that Google Maps proves accurate once I come out of the T station (our endearing term for subway). But I’m still alive, so yes, Boston is safe @ night! :P FRIDAY is now â€" and its all about Taekwondo and the Sunday tournament at Princeton. The whole campus is sprinting towards end-of-semester, and its getting hard to hold on. But I will let you know. // P.S. This is what Mr. Ebbers portrayed himself to be. A leader is only effective as his team. Building trusts takes time. Bernard Ebbers understood that people trust actions and not words. If a leader doesnt model his leadership style, Team member could lose trust. A leader must display behavior that that he/she expect his team to follow. A leader shouldnt ask someone to do something that you wouldnt do yourself. For example, a leader must lead by example. Showing your team, you are one of them and being responsible for outcomes whether positive or negative. Deviant behavior violates organization norms. It is a general decline in civility. Ebbers profess hatred for bureaucracies and his love for reduction of staffs in new acquisitions paints picture. Critics said the take overs of most companies did not make business sense and Worldcom did realized savings. There were questions about his capabilities and priorities. He was a man of conflicting personality. He expressed disdain and impatience to those that questioned the practices of Worldcom. He used rewards to influence his managers. He personally gave top managers loans of the record to buy back company stocks and power became concentrated in the top echelon of Worldcom. He kept his promise and stuck to his commitments. No one trust those who dont keep promises. He stuck to his commitment to make Worldcom the biggest telecommunications company in the world. He criticized European telecommunications players that he claimed was lagging behind North America. He didnt listen, ask questions consistently. He would have been a better leader had he kept quiet during discussion and listen to other advice. Consistency is key to leadership. Consistency of actions, behaviors, moods and expectations bring about good results. A good leader provides his management team with unwavering support that they can rely on and a set of rules and expectations that will guide the team through good and bad times. Success of a team is of greater concern than those of a leader. To get the best out of your team, show them that you put them ahead of your own ambitions. Let them feel a part of the team. Give them a seat at the table in achieving your ambitions. Give credit to where it is due. Punish when necessary. This was not Ebbers style of leadership. He had his own ambitions and dragged his team along. He had essentially bought his senior management team. They were sucking up to him. Success of a team is the leader success as well. Bernard was more of a corporate dictator than a leader. He was pretending to be cutting costs by increasing the heat in the summer and decreasing the temperature in the winter to on energy bill. While at the same time purchasing 164,000-acre ranch and 20,000 cattle. He never asked for feed backs on his actions, how he could help his management team be more productive, improve the work environment or how to better communicate. A good leader asks for feedbacks, what process can he change for the team to be more effective. Constructive feedbacks help improve a leaders ability to do a better job. Ebbers was unethical in his approach to leadership at Worldcom. A good leader as discussed earlier, lead by example. If a leader wants his management team to display good leadership qualities, he must display them first. For example, you want your team to go the extra mile, you as leader must do it first. Showing your team, you are one of them and their equal in being responsible for outcomes good or bad breed respect, honor and trust.

Only influenza A viruses and all its known subtypes infect birds.   Influenza A H5 affects both human and birds.   There are nine, potential subtypes of H5 known.   â€Å"H5 infections, such as HPAI H5N1 viruses currently circulating in Asia and Europe, have been documented among humans and sometimes cause severe illness or death† (CDC, 2).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 2006, a new strain of H5N1 bird flu appeared in China.   It affected three times as many Chinese poultry than it did the previous year.   Researchers say that it is a new â€Å"Fujian-like† strain of virus that came from a duck in Fujian, China in 2005 (MacKenzie, 1).   The rate of poultry infections jumped from 3 percent in 2005 to 95 percent by 2006.   Vaccine-induced antibodies did not recognize this new Fujian virus.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In 2008, a new strain of H5N1 was detected in Nigeria for the first time.   It was found to be different from the strains that were circulating in 2006 and 2007 (Stackyard, 1).   The new strain was similar to the strains identified in Italy, Afghanistan, and Iran in 2007.   â€Å"Influenza viruses constantly mutate, however, and vaccines are most effective against the highly specific strains that they are made from† (Bardi, 1).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   A team of scientist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which is a part of the National Institute of Health (NIH), report that it is possible to prepare vaccines and therapeutics to target a future mutant strain of H5N1. â€Å"This advance was made possible by creating mutations in the regions of the H5N1 hemagglutinin (HA) protein that directs the virus to bird or human cells and eliciting antibodies to it† (Bardi, 1).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   New strains appear and replace older strains.   When a new strain of virus emerges, antibody protection that may have developed after infection or vaccination with an older strain may not provide protection against the new strain.   For this reason, the influenza vaccine must be updated yearly.
